Hugo Schüwer Boss

Born in 1981, Hugo Schüwer Boss is a graduate of the Beaux-Arts in Besançon, where he currently lives. His practice is one of “found” abstraction. In other words, while relying on the codes and compositions of modern history and abstraction, his canvases in fact draw their forms from reality. You have to let your eyes and senses wander over the nuances of color, for underlying forces and forms from the depths of the canvas to emerge from the apparent abstraction.

In addition to teaching, the artist has been running the artist run space Sunset in Besançon since 2016. He has exhibited at prestigious venues such as Hunter College in New York, Villa Medici in Rome, Mamco in Geneva and Villa Arson in Nice. After obtaining the 1% cultural grant from the Delle-Dellemont customs, his work joined the collections of the Frac Franche Comté, the Frac Limousin, the Consortium in Dijon, and the Fonds national d’art Contemporain. In 2018, the Frac Franche Comté devoted its first institutional monographic exhibition to him. Recently, the artist was one of 80 French artists chosen by the Musée d’Orsay for the exhibition Le jour des peintres. This year Hugo Schüwer Boss has been chosen to exhibit at the Fondation Carmignac under the curatorship of Matthieu Poirier from April to November 2025. Entitled Vertigo, the exhibition will explore the links between natural phenomena and abstraction from 1950 to the present day. Galerie Ars Longa is exhibiting his work from February 26 to March 29, 2025 as part of the Abstractions exhibition, bringing together three artists from the contemporary abstract art scene.
