Mayura Torii was born in 1977 in Shizuoka, Japan. She currently lives and works in Marseille. Her work has developed between Japan, the United States, Germany and France. It is based on language and explores sensations of strangeness and presence more or less detached from reality. Mayura Torii lets herself be carried along by a floating incomprehension, a confusion of genres and values. She records and constructs this confusion, always in the name of a smile. Her objects, drawings and paintings, often accompanied by labels and titles, are conducive to word and image games. She shows how words mistaken for others unhook the images that relate to them.
Since 2007, the artist has exhibited in France and Europe in galleries and institutions such as the MAC in Marseille, while also taking part in various residencies, notably in 2023 at the Saison du Dessin Nord / Sud created by the Château de Servière in collaboration with the FRAC Picardie and with the support of the Centre Culturel Léo Lagrange. His work can also be found in the collections of the Musée de Picardie and the Musée de Marseille. The artist will be exhibiting at the 2025 edition of the prestigious contemporary drawing fair Drawing Now in April. Galerie Ars Longa is exhibiting her work from February 26 to March 29, 2025 as part of the exhibition Abstractions, bringing together three artists from the contemporary abstract art scene.
